Our preschool program is available for children aged 2 1/2 to the time they go to school (up to 6 years of age). On occasion, we may accept a child who is nearing 2 1/2 years of age but is developmentally ready for the preschool program to reduce the number of transitions for that child. This is permissible as a 20% mix of the existing program capacity.
The staff-to-child ratio for preschool-aged children is 1 staff member to every 8 children. We are licensed for 24 preschool-aged children at our Georgina Avenue site. During arrival, departure, and rest time, the ratio may be reduced to 1 staff member to every 12 children to allow for staff transitions.
The preschool program is based on enhancing the children’s learning through play. The children participate in child-led activities both indoors and outdoors to further develop their skills. They engage in activities such as creative art experiences, early literacy activities, motor skills, and dramatic play. The educators follow the childrens’ lead, being responsive to the childrens’ interests and creating meaningful learning experiences.
Preschoolers are required to go outside daily for a minimum of 2 hours, in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, as with all programs. The preschoolers typically will not go outside when the temperature is -20°C including the windchill factor or cooler, however, staff are encouraged to use their discretion and may go out if it’s slightly cooler than that for shorter periods of time. As such, appropriate outdoor apparel is required daily.
Parents of children in the preschool program are required to provide the following items:
- Diapers (if applicable)
- Baby wipes (if applicable)
- Extra clothing
- Indoor shoes
Our preschool educators are Kate, who is a Registered Early Childhood Educator who is enthusiastic, outgoing, and has been with Mahmowenchike since 2016, and Cassidy, who is kind and loving and has been with Mahmowenchike for the past year.
